WTC Documentary Arts

Reflecting the heritage of the mentoring relationship between Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, the Maybach Family Foundation provides opportunities for promising young adults from disadvantaged circumstances to connect and mentor with distinguished global leaders who are among the most prominent in their field.

The Maybach Family Foundation's Excellence in Mentoring Leadership program identifies compelling young talent (particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds) from across the globe, connects them with world-class practitioners, and provides the resources to undertake collaborative projects, all with the goal of enabling them to do great things with their lives.

As part of this program, Maybach undertakes partnerships with key organizations to provide a framework and, in some cases, hosting site for the mentorships. MFF's partnership with Silverstein Properties for the World Trade Center Documentary Arts Project is one such example.

The WTC Documentary Arts Project is an opportunity for young people to be mentored by a master photographer / filmmaker at the World Trade Center site in New York City, while undertaking a project that will allow the protégé to hone his or her skills and vision with guidance from the mentor.

The mentor is Joe Woolhead, the World Trade Center site photographer.

The four confirmed protégés for 2008 / 09 are:

  • Marika Asatiani (Georgia)
  • Benjamin Jarosch (NY)
  • Vicky Roy (India)
  • Nicole Tung (NY)

The project began on August 4, 2008, with Marika and Benjamin in the first round.  Vicky Roy and Nicole Tung began the project in February 2009.

The protégés spent approx. 2 hours a day in August and early September 2008 at the WTC site.  A press conference to announce the program and showcase some of the protégés work was held on Tuesday, September 9.

The duration of the project is 6 months to 1 year.

Silverstein Properties has made office space available on the 10th floor of 7 WTC for protégés to work independently and with their mentors.

Ulrich Schmidt-Maybach is the founder of the Maybach Family Foundation.  Maybach is owned by Daimler AG and based in Stuttgart.  Mercedes-Benz is a sister company.
